View Full Version : The 'other' Q2 Benchmark

Maggi
20th July 1999, 19:26
Hi Folks !

Wanna try a Q2 map that has really big textures ?

There is a special S3TC level available here:
http://www.s3content.com/quake2/mon2.exe

That one contains two timedemos ...

All you have to do is extract it to your Q2 dir, delete/rename that given OpenGL32.dll (it tries to enable TextureCompression on S3 cards) and off ya go. http://forums.gagames.com/forums/smile.gif

Note that you'll need quite a lot gfx-ram or at least a decent AGP-card, but be prepared for some 'advertising' and a bit too colorfull textures. http://forums.gagames.com/forums/wink.gif

It runs very impressive on my G400 with 32MB RAM, but I'd like to know if even a G200 AGP can handle that one ...

The demo names can be found in your Q2 demos folder.

Best thing is that I'm no longer annoyed by those well known 4 regular standard benchmarks ... I hope I can find some scores from a S3 card.

It's quiet around here!
But I tried mon2.dm2 and my G200 (oc'd) got over 22 frames/s with celeron 464A. I think it's quite nice score, not playable, but nice....

How's your G400?

Thanx Micko !!!

That's quite good for a G200 http://forums.gagames.com/forums/smile.gif

I'll have to reinstall the public drivers to give you the fps on my G400 ... I hope I can do that tonight.

Btw, do you have 8 or 16MB gfx RAM ?

I have 8Mb. I'm at school/work now, so I have to check my results when I'm at home.

BTW, Voodoo2 doesn't handle mon2.dm2 very well, whatta suprise...about 17fps.

Maggi
21st July 1999, 22:13
I'm surprised that it runs on a Voodoo at all, because somewhere I read something about textures in 1024x1024x24bpp, used in that map and Voodoos are limited to 256x256 ...

Hi there

Well I am getting even better results with my g200 8 mb oc PLL200, Celeron 450:
map mon2.dm2:
640x480x16, 35.8 fps
800x600x16, 28.4 fps
1024x768x16,20.1 fps

Test were done with q2 default settings (gl_linear_mipmap_nearest)

Does that Matrox AGP implementation rocks or what http://forums.gagames.com/forums/smile.gif

I have 96 Mb ram, and the agp aperture size at 128 Mb.

Good Morning everybody !

Dummy me forgot to bring the revised PD5.13 with me back home, thus I had to use the first one ...

Anyway, here we go ...

Firstly I deleted 'autoexec.cfg' & 'config.cfg', set to standard OpenGL,
disabled palettized textures & VSync and chose the according resolution.

All tests were run five times and I report the 2nd highest framerate.

PD 5.13 - 1st public release - 16bit Zbuffer

map mon2.dm2

640x480x16bpp - 82.6 fps
640x480x32bpp - 82.0 fps

800x600x16bpp - 79.7 fps
800x600x32bpp - 77.5 fps

1024x768x16bpp - 70.2 fps
1024x768x32bpp - 66.1 fps

1152x864x16bpp - 63.9 fps
1152x864x32bpp - 58.3 fps

.........................

map one.dm2

640x480x16bpp - 64.1 fps
640x480x32bpp - 63.2 fps

800x600x16bpp - 63.1 fps
800x600x32bpp - 62.2 fps

1024x768x16bpp - 57.6 fps
1024x768x32bpp - 55.0 fps

1152x864x16bpp - 52.0 fps
1152x864x32bpp - 48.3 fps

.........................

http://forums.gagames.com/forums/smile.gif Is that impressive, or what ? http://forums.gagames.com/forums/smile.gif

Maggi .. thanx ALOT !!
all i can say is a BIG WOW !!
playing these eye candy maps from S3 ..sharp image .. high detailed textures .. colors .. i guess no other card can give me this quality and rich colors .. and it's running smooth at 800x600 even without overclocking and missing AGP 2x .. this is really GREAT !!
thanx again

wow this is crazy guys... I got inspired by your quake2 talk and installed the demo (I have not bought quake 2...) and tested it. I have a TNT and a voodoo 2. the default open GL did not work, however 3dfx openGL did!

and why is this so interesting? I'm running Windows 2000 RC1... hihihi

gosh and that was while I downloaded the S3TC high-res level and playing MP3 music.

I typed screenrefresh now and then, and I got 50-60 fps in 800x600 high quality sound and max textures/16 bit.

And I have also enabled 3D Stereo Enhanchement in soundproperties. With that on, I could enable/disable high quality sound in quake 2 without a hitch while simultaneously playing a MP3 file with WinAmp.

I have a P266 (oc'd to 333) 224 MB ram voodoo 2 12 mb card (pure 3d II, reverted pass-through to the spectra 2500) and a Soundblaster 64 Gold.

HAHAH here's a http://home.c2i.net/aka_mecha/bilder/desktop.jpg screenshot (210 kb)

DAmn, I love windows 2000 http://forums.gagames.com/forums/smile.gif

Hope the G400 will be as stable and cool as the voodoo 2 currently is !

Hmm the S3TC level is almost done.
cya!
